The Town of Milton is potentially installing speed cushions along Campbell Avenue East between Guelph Line/Main Street and Canyon Road.

Over the last few years, a number of studies were undertaken to assess the need for traffic calming measures on Campbell Avenue East. The results showed that additional measures warranted consideration.

As part of the Town’s Traffic Calming Policy, 51% of residents directly impacted by the traffic calming measure must be in support for the measure to be implemented. In this case, 51% of residents with direct residential frontage along Campbell Avenue East between Guelph Line/Main Street and Canyon Road must be in support.

How you can participate:

Residents living within the neighbourhood or on the affected road are encouraged to watch the virtual presentation of the proposed Campbell Avenue East speed cushions.

After viewing the presentation, residents with direct frontage on Campbell Avenue East are asked to complete the survey below indicating support or no support of the proposed speed cushions

Comments and survey responses will be accepted until May 30, 2025.

    Thank you for your question.

Lowering speed limits and implementing traffic calming measures like speed cushions can reduce noise levels.

The speed cushions that have been installed within the Town of Milton have shown improvement on driver behaviour.

Staff will also place "traffic calming ahead" signage to inform drivers of the intrusive measures along the roadway.

    Thank you for your question.

Speed cushions are installed to reduce vehicle speeds, ensuring that vehicles travel at maximum 50 km/h when driving on the roadway. They are designed to encourage drivers to slow down below the posted speed limit when driving over the cushion.

    Thank you for your question.

Our standard is to keep speed cushions 200m apart depending on the existing conditions of the roadway. This means, intersections, curves, hills or boulevard spacing for the speed cushion so it is not directly in front of a driveway. Speed cushions also need to spaced 200m away from existing traffic control devices (traffic signals).

Speed cushions are 8cm in height. This is a standard using our Transportation Association of Canada Guidelines.

Unfortunately, motorcycles are a concern with every municipality. We propose speed cushions as not to impede on emergency response times. Having a speed table (this is a speed hump that goes across the full width of the roadway with no gaps) would affect emergency response times.

Noise concerns of traffic related offences fall under Halton Regional Police Services.

The signage that you have mentioned has been a non-affective traffic calming measure along Campbell Avenue East as stated in the presentation. Driver Feedback Boards, Police Enforcement and Slow Down Signage are non-intrusive traffic calming measures and even with all these measures being placed, speeding is still a concern.

    Kind regards,

  • Share Thank you for the excellent presentation! Like others, I also am concerned about motorcycles. Based on what the presentation shows, if emergency vehicles and buses can get their tires through the spaces, then motorcycles would be able to go through the space too. Also, if it does make them slow too much, they then tend to really gun it, making a LOT more noise! This is why a stop sign won't be helpful! I was just in Glen Williams today. They have traffic calming measures too. One road I took has a speed limit of 40 kph, and they have the speed cushion all the way across, but it is wider, which meant I could drive along at 40 kph, and not be bumped or jarred or have to slow down well below the speed limit. Traffic keeps moving. It was not unpleasant to drive on at 40 kph. Since our limit is 50 kph, could something like Glen Williams' speed "cushions" be considered? I highly recommend you take a look at what they have, and ask them (Georgetown, Halton Hills) whether they are working for them. on Facebook Share Thank you for the excellent presentation! Campbell Avenue West is a Regional Road.

Staff have installed Driver Feedback Boards several times along Campbell Avenue East for a 2 week rotational basis. Well, Driver Feedback Boards are a great non-intrusive traffic calming measure, speeding is still a concern for the residents of Campbell Avenue East.

Motorcycles will still need to slow down to travel in-between the spacing of the speed cushions.
