The Town of Milton is potentially installing speed cushions along Martin Street between Steeles Avenue and Millside Drive.

Over the last few years, a number of studies were undertaken to assess the need for traffic calming measures on Martin Street. The results showed that additional measures warranted consideration.

As part of the Town’s Traffic Calming Policy, 51% of residents directly impacted by the traffic calming measure must be in support for the measure to be implemented. In this case, 51% of residents with direct residential frontage along Martin Street between Steeles Avenue and Millside Drive must be in support.

How you can participate:

Residents living within the neighbourhood or on the affected road are encouraged to watch the virtual presentation of the proposed Martin Street speed cushions.

After viewing the presentation, residents with direct frontage on Martin Street are asked to complete the survey below indicating support or no support of the proposed speed cushions

Comments and survey responses will be accepted until May 30, 2025.

  • Share if implemented i would want the speed humps to be engineered so that you can actually drive the speed limit over them... not have to slow down to 30km/h like you do going over the speed humps on Woodward just east of Martin. on Facebook Share if implemented i would want the speed humps to be engineered so that you can actually drive the speed limit over them... not have to slow down to 30km/h like you do going over the speed humps on Woodward just east of Martin. on Twitter Share if implemented i would want the speed humps to be engineered so that you can actually drive the speed limit over them... not have to slow down to 30km/h like you do going over the speed humps on Woodward just east of Martin. on Linkedin Email if implemented i would want the speed humps to be engineered so that you can actually drive the speed limit over them... not have to slow down to 30km/h like you do going over the speed humps on Woodward just east of Martin. link

    Thank you for your question.

Speed cushions are typically installed approximately 200m away from traffic signals. In selecting the proposed location for the speed cushions, staff considered both existing traffic control devices and areas where speeding is most frequent.

It’s also important to note the presence of turning lanes for the traffic signal at Steeles Avenue and Martin Street, which begin just north of Kings Court Crescent. For safety and operational reasons, speed cushions are not placed directly in front of intersections such as Martin Street and Kings Court Crescent.

All-way stops are not considered to be a form a traffic calming. All-way stops are placed when warrants are fulfilled. It is also important to note that all-way stops are intended to control the right-of-way at an intersection, and are not to be used as a speed control device. Studies show that un-warranted all-way stops can lead to poor driver compliance, as drivers become accustomed to not meeting opposing traffic at the intersection.

    Kind regards,

There are other areas around Milton especially the Education District on Louis St. Laurent Drive where the street has turned into a major road block during peak hours and I have witnessed vehicle tumble over and this is a serious concern to families walking to school and this needs urgent action. on Facebook Share Besides calming traffic measures on Martin Street. Thank you for your comment.

Automated Speed Enforcement (ASE) may be implemented on any roadway in Milton, provided it falls within a designated Community Safety Zone or School Zone.

Please note that ASE is not a permanent installation, as cameras are rotated between various locations.

While the Town of Milton is in the process of developing an ASE program, there are currently no ASE cameras in place.

    Kind regards,

    Thank you for your question.

The speed cushions are 8cm high. This height is a standard throughout all of Canada using our Transportation Association of Canada guidelines.

Residents that live directly on Woodward Avenue have seen a reduction in speeding and volume.

Staff are currently collecting data on Woodward Avenue to see how the speed and volumes have changed since speed cushions have been placed.

Automated Speed Enforcement will be considered for any roadway within Milton as long as it is in a Community Safety Zone or a School Zone. Staff are currently working to get our Automated Speed Enforcement Program running as soon as possible.

    Kind regards,
