The Town of Milton is reviewing and updating its Official Plan policies and zoning by-law regulations for additional residential units (ARU). The changes aim to expand housing options in urban and rural Milton.

The Town is in the process of reviewing and updating its policies and regulations for ARUs in the rural areas of Milton. Amendments to the Official Plan and zoning by-law are being drafted to permit ARUs in the rural areas where permitted by provincial policies.

What are additional residential units (ARUs)?

To be considered an additional residential unit (ARU), the unit must be self-contained and include a kitchen, sleeping area, and bathroom for the exclusive use of its occupants. ARUs must comply with all applicable requirements under the Ontario Building Code and Fire Code.

ARUs are also referred to as second units, secondary suites, accessory dwelling units, basement apartments, coach houses, laneway houses, garden suites, tiny homes, granny flats, in-law apartments or nanny suites.
